Interliber book fair

Every November a book fair called “Interliber” is held in the Zagreb Velesajam (fairground). If you want an insight into the people of Croatia – well, at least the people of Zagreb – here is one place get it.

Interliber occupies two huge pavilions. I have never seen so many books on display. Some are translations of English books, but so many (for a small country) are local products.

2018 saw the 41st occasion of Interliber. That's quite a history!

Even on the sixth night of a seven-day event, the crowds were huge, and business was rocking. These people come to buy books like I might go to buy fruit.

Now I understand why there are so many bookstores in Zagreb. Certainly not as many as there are pekarnice (bakeries), but there are lots.

I’m sure that svi stanovci Zagreba go to this event. Books and literature seem to in their blood. Given that reading encourages imagining and thinking, no wonder they are such creative people. No wonder that most of their statues pay homage to writers, poets, and artists (rather than politicians and sportspeople).

Zagrepčani respect different people than is the case where I live. I don’t say that to make a judgement of which is better, but the difference is obvious.

Here there are publishers, editors and authors available for discussion. As well as displays, there are book signings, interviews, and panel discussions. For example …

Nearly an hour discussing a cook book - although I must say it looks a classy publication. With an English version as well. Here are the author, the photographer and a health nutrition expert.

The 130 000 visitors are not just lookers. Everybody, absolutely everybody, takes a few books home ......
