Croatian sayings and expressions #003Baš me briga!
As if I care!
Imagine a short conversation between Roko and his wife Benita about a football match between Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb - in some people's eyes, perhaps the most important event in the Croatian calendar. [Naravno nije tako - ali ajde Hajduk!] Roko is obsessed with football, but Benita is the opposite. The conversation goes ..... Roko: Hajduk je pobijedio Dinamo! [Hajduk defeated Dinamo!] Benita: Baš me briga! Koliko je sati? [Who cares? What is the time?]
Baš me briga!
Literally: I really care! But said with sarcasm to mean "As if I care!", "Who cares!" or "So what!" Puss! The world is coming to an end! Wake up and worry about it! Really? Yawn .... Ho hum .... Baš me briga! Consolidation of understanding ..... (Ups, ne želim biti učitelj!) Tata: Toma, jedi povrće! [Toma, eat your vegetables!] Toma: Ne! Želim gledati televiziju. [No. I want to watch television.] Tata: Kad sam ja bio mali .......... [When I was small ...] Pogodite što je onda rekao Toma!? [Guess what Toma said then!]
