Croatian sayings and expressions #008Sve si to ti kriv
It’s all YOUR fault!
You are probably aware that we might say Ja sam kriv, or in the case of a woman, Ja sam kriva. “It’s my fault” or “I am to blame.” Or, putting the blame to somebody else: “Ti si kriv(a).”
But there is a more aggressive form of accusation that needs an exclamation mark:
Sve si to ti kriv! [It’s all your (bloody) fault!] This doesn’t work without the emphasis on ti.
Of course, Sve si to ti kriv! doesn’t work without finger-wagging.
In Croatia, it used to be more common to hear: Sve si to ti kriva! Just sayin’ ……
But that doesn’t happen any longer, of course. This exclamation might be a little hard to make sense of grammatically. So far as I can make out, it is a colloquial and aggressive form of Ti si kriv za sve to! [You are to blame for all of that!] Make sense?
