Croatian sayings and expressions #007Na licu mjesta
On the spot
Literally, na licu mjesta translates in English to "on the face of the place". But in the Croatian idiom, na licu mjesta means "on the spot", "there and then" (or "then and there"?). For example ......... $75!! What a horrible parking inspector! It's not like I ran over somebody! And anyway, there was another parking bay for disabled just 250 m away ........
I guess that na licu mjesta is a little like odmah (immediately) except that odmah refers to time only, whereas na licu mjesta refers to time and place. Someone might correct me?
And here is another pictorial anecdote .... My teacher Mateja at SpeakCro tells me that if some Croatians are talking in English, they might jokingly say "He fixed it on the face of the place". For those of us learning Croatian, I think that this sort of saying is just as valuable and useful as the grammar. What do you think?
