Miscellaneous items #015Tri, četiri, sad!
Ready, set, go!
Of course, learning Croatian involves more than just learning the grammar and vocabulary, and so on. It means being able to participate in conversations, to be able to watch a Croatian movie, to be able to understand the newspapers, and to know characteristic Croatian ways. Important things, such as how to start a race .... What do we Aussies say to start a race? In my experience, it has always been "Get ready! Set! GO!" or occasionally "One, two THREE!" But not in Croatia. Oh no. Here's how it is done in Croatia ....
Tri, četiri, .... SAD!
Yes, if you are starting a race for your kids at a picnic, you'll need to call out "Tri, četiri, SAD! " How on earth did "Three, four, NOW!" come about? What happened to one and two?! I could hardly believe my ears the first time I heard it! But of course we all have evolved in our own ways. So interesting! I suppose it might have been stranger. It might have been "Sedamdeset i osam, sedamdeset i devet, .... SAD!"
