Core verb: PISATI

Following are concise meanings (with illustrative examples) of verbs derived from the verb pisati.
 
They exist in pairs – one continous form (imperfective), and the other finished/non-continuous form (perfective). For each pair, the continuous form is the first one shown.

Their declensions have the following patterns:
opisivati:         opisujem, opisuješ, opisuje, opisujemo, opisujete, opisuju.     Ja sam opisivao, ...
opisati:            opišem, opišeš, opiše, opišemo, opišete, opišu.                      Ja sam opisao, ......

pisati (impf.)       to write, to compose written text, to state in writing.
 
Pišem pismo prijatelju.                                               I am writing a letter to a friend.
O čemu pišeš?                                                           What are you writing about?
Piši mi što prije.                                                          Write to me as soon as possible.
Mnogi ljudi ne znaju čitati ni pisati.                            Many people don’t know how to read nor write.
Oni dobro pišu.                                                           They write well.
Gdje to piše da …… ?                                               Where is it written that …… ?
Na znaku piše da je zabrenjeno pušenje.                 The sign states that smoking is forbidden.
Piše jednostavno i jasno.                                           He writes simply and clearly.

 
Derived words
pisanje (n. noun): the act of writing.  eg, Pisanje mi pomaže razmišljati.
pisac (m. noun): writer, author.  eg, Pisac radi na novoj knjizi.
spis (m. noun): written document, text.  eg, Sud ima taj spis.
spisatelj/-ica (noun): writer.  eg, Ona je poznata spisateljica.
pismo (n. noun): letter, way of writing.  eg, Dobio sam pismo od sestre.  Kinesko pismo je složeno.

Ona je napisala taj roman 2016. g.                           She wrote (and finished) that novel in 2016,
Napisao sam tri stranice.                                           I wrote three pages.
Trebao bih mu napisati poruku.                                 I should write a message to him.
Napisao je adresu na papir.                                      He wrote the address on paper.
Moram napisati sastavak na hrvatskom.                  I have to write an essay in Croatian.
Napisao sam ispit/zadaću.                                        I took (and completed) the exam/homework.

napis (m. noun):  inscription, text, caption.  eg, Na zidu je bio čudan napis.
napisivanje (n. noun): the act of writing (to completion):  eg, Napisivanje izvještaja je završeno.
napisan/-a/-o/-i/-e/-a (adj): written (completed).  eg, To je dobro napisano pismo.
napisano (adv.): as written.  eg, Kako je to napisano? Rukom.
 

zapisivati/zapisati              to record in writing, to make notes, to make an entry.

Ona zapisuje što učitelj govori.                                  She is writing down what the teacher says.
Uvijek zapisujem važne stvari.                                  I always record (in writing) important things.
Podatke zapisujemo u sustav.                                  We record the data into the system.
Dok su razgovarali, ja sam zapisivao.                       While they were speaking, I was writing things down.
Novine su zapisivale tijek događaja.                         The newspapers were recording the course of events.
Sve sam zapisivao u pamćenje.                                (fig.) I was recording everything in my memory.
